ROBERT BILLINGTON born in 1896 (Grandfather)

Circa 1960, he bought us a tape recorder. I remember the joy of hearing these renditions from my grandad on Christmas morning.

Woolworths poem

Danny Boy

Sweet Jesus (coming soon)

Silent Night (coming soon)

Woolworths is a British high street store from 1909 to present day.
During the Second World War their slogan was 'Nothing over sixpence' in the store. This poem was written by Wilcock & performed by Ernest Hastings & had more verses, with the last lines sung to the music of "Rule Britannia".

There’s a wonderful emporium just opened in our town, by a well known man, with a great renown.
You can furnish a flat for less than half a crown, and there’s nothing over sixpence in the store.

It’s owned by a Mr Woolworth & its like Aladdin’s cave, and you can get anything there from the cradle to the grave.
And if you buy a wedding ring there, just think how much you’ll save, and there’s nothing over sixpence in the store.

Now all you courting couples about to do the trick, just have a walk round Woolworths before you buy a stick.
And you can fill your bottom draw, for half a crown, in half a tick, and there’s nothing over sixpence in the stores.

Hobbs & Sudcliff get their bats there & Baldwin gets his pipes & Winston gets his hats.
And the Prince of Wales would never dream of going elsewhere for his spats, and there’s nothing over sixpence in the stores.

There are some real bargains there that cannot be denied. A charming lady in a soap department I applied .
How much are you miss, and of course she replied, well there’s nothing over sixpence in the stores

They sell penny patent mousetraps there & children’s penny books, two penny cubes of oxo & three penny tins of soups.
And also Yankee safety razors as supplied to British troops, and there’s nothing over sixpence in the stores

If you want a babies dummy, or you have a pain in your rum-rum-tummy. or a brand new pipe, or a yard of tripe, go to Woolworth stores in the morning.
And if you want his motto, it's hanging outside the door, there is nothing over sixpence, in this store.
