Family
stories:
Sarah was brought up in London by grandparents, after her mother died
and father remarried. The family were spiritualists. An extra place
would be laid at the table for a deceased relative. Age twentynine
she married a soldier who was twelve years her senior. She converted
to the catholic religion, to which she became devoted. Her strong
character and strict morals kept all the family on their toes. She
instructed her ten children, their wives and grandchildren to be respectful
and god fearing. Sarah was very upset that her daughter Sarah Jane
was going to emigrate, with her brothers and the trip was cancelled
on the day before departure. In her final years she lived with Sarah
Jane and family.
Nickname "Cockney Sparrow", from her London origin and excellent
singing voice, it is likley to have been used by none, save the foolish
and brave.
